Snow-reliable rating Winterberg (Skiliftkarussell)
The region has largely freed itself from the unreliable natural snow conditions typical of the Sauerland. The Skiliftkarussell Winterberg boasts the most powerful snowmaking system in the German low mountain ranges. With around 170 snow cannons, it can produce approximately 5,000 cubic meters of snow per hour. This system is supplied by several reservoirs, and just two or three cold nights are enough to start ski operations. In total, 23 of the 26 lifts can operate without a single flake of natural snow. Three lifts require natural snow: two of these are practice lifts running parallel to a snow-covered facility, and the third is the Nordhang at Kahlen Asten, which still manages around 60 ski days per season even without snowmaking. On the snow-covered slopes, the season typically lasts around 100 days. The Flutlichthang and the Poppenbergabfahrt I are particularly snow-sure. Here, ski operations in spring sometimes end due to lack of interest rather than lack of snow.
